A Maryland man was arrested and charged with murder after he allegedly mowed down an elderly woman with a stolen forklift in a Home Depot parking lot, according to police.
Bryce Caleb Timothy Brown, 20, busted into a Lowe’s in Waldorf around 12:40 a.m. on Sunday, stole a forklift and rammed through its rear gates, the Charles County Sheriff’s Office said.
He drove the forklift into the neighboring Home Depot parking lot and “for unknown reasons,” plowed it into a parked car, according to police.
Gloristine Pinkney, 73, who had been sleeping in her car, got out after Brown struck the vehicle and started running away.
He pursued her and ran her over with the forklift. He then stole her vehicle and fled, police said.
Officers who arrived at the scene in response to a reported burglary at the Lowe’s found the forklift in the parking lot with Pinkney underneath it. She was declared dead at the scene.
Brown and Pinkney did not know each other, police said.
Police soon identified Brown as a suspect and found the victim’s car parked near his residence later that same day.
He was arrested and charged with first-degree murder, second-degree murder, assault, theft and other related charges.
The 20-year-old is being held at the Charles County Detention Center without bond.
