Four people — including two young brothers — were injured Tuesday after two gunmen fired into a crowd of hundreds enjoying a warm evening in a Bronx park, police said
The gunshots rang out inside St. James Park near Jermone Avenue and 193rd Street shortly before 6 p.m., the NYPD said.
A 3-year-old boy and his 6-year-old brother were both shot in the leg, the NYPD said
A 25-year-old man was struck once in the back, while his cousin, 23, was shot “multiple times through his body.”
“As a dad and a parent in the city, I couldn’t imagine this happening to my kids. Absolutely heart-wrenching and disturbing,” Chief of Patrol John Chell said at a press conference.
All four victims were rushed to the hospital, where they are expected to recover from their injuries, according to Chell.
The NYPD obtained video showing the masked assailants pulling up to the Kingsbridge park on an illegal scooter and the rear passenger firing into the crowd.
After firing at least five rounds, the duo fled down 193rd Street and south on Creston Avenue, sources told The Post.
Investigators do not know who the intended target was or what the gunmen’s motive was.
“However, once again, we have a recurring theme in the city: illegal bikes, illegal firearms and people who pull those firearms,” Chell said.
“Two people with no regard for society or life will pull up to a crowded park … fire into that park, where hundreds of people were congregating on a hot July day. This is totally unacceptable.”
Chell said detectives are canvassing the area for video that may have captured the pair.
The shooting is the second to occur in a Bronx park in 24 hours.
A 17-year-old was hit in the torso by a round apparently intended for someone else while inside Grant Park in Morrisania around 10:50 p.m., cops said.
She was taken to Lincoln Medical Center, where she was listed in stable condition.
The police are still looking for the gunman.
