A single mother of two was shot dead while using an ATM in a Chicago suburb — allegedly by a pair linked to a string of other armed robberies.
Jonnie Angel Klein, 32, a mom of a 14-year-old boy and 10-year-old daughter, was at a Chase bank ATM in her hometown of Worth when she was accosted around 3 p.m. on Saturday, ABC 7 reported.
Klein was then gunned down in the brazen attack while she was withdrawing cash, police said.
Family members told WGN-TV that she had just gotten off work before heading on the fateful errand.
Two suspects — Tamara Jailynn Johnson, 22, and Jason Jerry Joseph Johnson, 23 – were arrested the following day after an investigation by the South Suburban Major Crimes Task Force. It was not clear if, or how, they were related.
Both Johnsons were charged with first-degree murder — and are “linked to several recent armed robberies in Chicagoland and northwest Indiana,” said police Chief Timothy Denton.
“Multiple firearms were recovered, one of which is believed to be the weapon used in the homicide,” the police chief said.
As well as a mom to two kids, Klein also was a caregiver for her ailing mother, who has been battling cancer.
“It’s been hard on her mother, brother, daughter son. So, it’s just devastating to see that,” a cousin, Nick Klein, told ABC7.
“She’s always been the light of our family, taking care of her mother, brother and kids. She’s always been that person,” the cousin said.
“She would give you the shirt off her back. A lot of people will miss her.”
A GoFundMe page was created by Klein’s relatives to help pay for funeral costs and expenses.
“Jonnie was a devoted single mother to Jeremy, 14, and McKayla, 10, and a loving caretaker for her mom,” the account says.
“She worked tirelessly to provide for her family without complaint. She was a kind, caring, humble, loving, family member (mother, daughter, sister, aunt, niece, cousin), a friend to many, a dedicated worker, a provider for those in need, and an amazing human being all round,” it reads.
The two suspects are scheduled to appear in court for a bond hearing Wednesday at the Cook County Courthouse in Bridgeview.
