A Queens man shot his building super before opening fire on responding cops, leading to an hours-long standoff on Wednesday that ended when he shot himself, witnesses and authorities said.
The gunman blasted his 48-year-old super in the stomach during an argument inside the apartment building on 54th Street near 31st Avenue in Astoria shortly before 11 a.m. and then shot at police from a sixth floor window, according to the NYPD.
Police raced into the building, where they fired three shots at the suspect in the hallway but missed the man, authorities said.
The shooter then barricaded himself inside his apartment, leading to an intense three-hour standoff with cops.
Inside his apartment, the gunman shot himself in the chest as police from the Emergency Services Unit were pointing cameras inside his home, NYPD Chief of Department Jeffrey Maddrey said at the scene.
“As we were putting the camera in the apartment, we heard a gunshot from the apartment,” Maddrey said.
“And with the use of our camera, we saw the male laying on the floor. He was yelling for help. Our officers were able to get him to relinquish his firearm that he still had in his hand.”
The suspect is “known to the department” and the shooting stemmed from a dispute with the super, Maddrey said.
A building resident, Avtar Singh, told The Post he called 911 after the wounded super followed him outside the building.
“He told me, ‘Call the police,’” Singh said.
Video obtained by The Post shows the victim writhing in pain outside the building as blood soaks through his t-shirt.
Gunfire is heard as police stand outside the building, the video shows.
“Oh my god, I am sorry,” Singh’s wife tells the super as he rocks back and forth in pain, according to another video shared with The Post.
The super and his attacker, whose identity hasn’t been released, were both rushed to area hospitals, police said.
Maddrey praised the NYPD’s use of technology during the standoff, saying they rolled out drones and the robot Digidog.
Charges were pending against the suspect Wednesday night.
