Only public anger will move the City Council to drop its latest bright idea for handcuffing cops — this time, with impossible paperwork burdens.
Public Advocate Jumaane Williams, City Council Speaker Adrienne Williams and other progressives seem to have a veto-proof majority for their bill to force NYPD officers to fill out forms for even the most mundane interaction with New Yorkers.
Cops are already leaving faster than the city can replace them; this bill would further tank NYPD morale and accelerate the exodus — and starkly reduce the effectiveness of the remaining force.
Way to send crime soaring.
Cop-hater Williams is leading the charge to require officers to file a report on all low-level “police-civilian investigative encounters.”
Officers would have to document each of 7 million contacts with the public each year — with data on the civilian’s race, age and gender, among much else.
That way Williams can issue more reports complaining that, say, cops talk to “too many” blacks and Latinos, or “two few.” More micro-managing laws to follow!
The price: Some combo of less officer time on the streets (and more back at the precinct doing paperwork), more NYPD overtime (when cops are already furious at excessive OT demands) — and officers second-guessing whether to talk to civilians when it means another freaking form.
It’s obvious insanity, but progressives gotta “progress.”
If you care about public safety — your safety — let your councilman know: If he or she votes for this madness, you’ll show up at every opportunity to vote for a different candidate.
A voter revolt is the only thing they fear.
