An NYPD cop was busted for allegedly sharing a picture of a crime suspect’s debit card as part of an identity theft scheme, authorities said Wednesday.
Officer Andy Urrutia, 24, is accused of snapping a photo of the card, belonging to a woman arrested in March, and of then sending the picture to several accomplices — including one who tried to use the card at a Starbucks, according to Bronx prosecutors.
“Lunch on me, guys,” the cop allegedly wrote in a group chat where he shared the image on March 23, 2023, four days after the woman’s arrest on unspecified charges, according to a criminal complaint.
Someone in the group replied, “Probably got overdraft fees cause they broke, ” the complaint said.
“Try it,” Urrutia then wrote to his pals, according to the court document. “You are all welcomed [sic].”
“It’s a Bronx zip code. I believe so,” he allegedly added.
Then a pal responded, “About to run it up at Starbucks,” according to the court papers.
Financial records revealed four declined transactions between the card on Starbucks within a 12-minute period that afternoon, the complaint said.
Urrutia, who was assigned to the 52nd Precinct in the north Bronx, was suspended from the NYPD without pay following his arrest, the department said.
He faces a top charge of grand larceny, as well as criminal possession of stolen property, petit larceny, official misconduct, unlawful possession of personal ID information, attempted petit larceny and attempted identity theft, according to the complaint.
He pleaded not guilty during his arraignment in Bronx Criminal Court later Tuesday and was released on his own recognizance, according to online records.
Urrutia’s attorney, Mario Perez, did not return a call for comment Wednesday.
