Alleged Times Square shooter arrested: Letters to the Editor — Feb. 16, 2024

The Issue: The arrest of the teen migrant who allegedly opened fire in a crowd in Times Square.

If Times Square is not safe then there is little hope for the rest of the city (“Times Square ‘cross’ hairs,” Feb. 10).

Times Square is the focal point for tourism. This kind of violent crime will deter visitors, who are a major contributor to the economy of the city. We need to assure the world that Times Square is safe from criminals.

Ed Houlihan

Ridgewood, NJ

So this 15-year-old migrant, Jesus Alejandro Rivas-Figueroa, let into this country by the Biden administration and lodging in a NYC shelter, somehow has the money to acquire a handgun to allegedly shoot at police?

They should drop this mook off at President Biden’s Delaware beach house so he can hang out with Hunter. America has really gone nuts.

Peter Sulzicki

Stratford, Conn.

The alleged teen shooter must not have realized he was in the Times Square Gun-Free Zone. As of 2022, you can’t carry a gun in Times Square — unless you are a criminal, of course.

Michael Reilly

Manhattan

Say whatever you want about former President Donald Trump: He is nasty, pompous, egotistical, a bully, etc. But he was right about migrants.

Not all of them are bad, but some have proven to be criminals. The teenager accused of shooting up Times Square is a perfect example. He was given a place to live in New York City, yet carried around an expensive firearm. Where is the outrage?

I voted for Trump twice and will vote for him again because we need to stop this mayhem. I don’t like the guy personally, but he is better than what we have.

I wish Trump would just shut up and let Biden’s policies do the talking.

Tony Anastasio

Staten Island

The Venezuelan teen’s actions — allegedly shooting at cops and hitting an innocent bystander — is not shocking. Venezuela is one of the most violent countries in the world.

We have brought the problems of these countries to our shores. With millions of migrants arriving every year, and policies across the nation doing little to stop that influx, what will become of America?

Susan Kerr

Stony Brook

The Issue: Reports of in-fighting among staffers in President Biden’s White House.

Nobody should be surprised by the reported chaos among President Biden’s top advisers (“Biden’s inner circle of chaos,” Feb. 13).

This is just more proof of failed leadership from Biden and the danger of disagreements within the White House. The current staffers seem to lack the expertise to enact policy that prioritizes voters’ interests.
Whenever there is chaos, people turn on each other. The combination of former Obama staffers and Biden staffers is like oil and water.

Obviously, they don’t care about the optics at home and abroad. I think these staffers are beginning to see the end of their time in the White House, so the chickens have come home to roost.

There is only so much deception that one can tolerate before the “White House of Cards” finally collapses.

Greg Raleigh

Washington, DC

I’m just looking forward to the eventual book that will be written by one of Biden’s toadies — a former adviser, perhaps — after the big guy is put out to pasture.

I suspect the insights regarding Biden’s fitness will be shocking, appalling and possibly criminal, and will show just how venal and malign were the motives of those who were supposed to have helped him.

Jake McNicholas

Whitestone
