Leave the sleeping to Sleepy Joe! Donald Trump is just playing possum, his supporters say.
The former president, 77, appeared to fall asleep for two days in a row this week during jury selection in his criminal case in a Manhattan court for charges related to hush money payments to Stormy Daniels.
And while reporters in the room seem shocked that someone could doze off during their very own serious legal proceedings, supporters in Trump’s camp are standing by their slumbering man.
One insider speculated that it’s all theatrics meant to convey just how little Trump is worried.
“He thinks it’s bulls–t, it’s boring, it’s not worth his time,” they told us. “It’s a ruse. Everything he does is calculated. He’s never fallen asleep. It’s not a thing he does. He goes to several meetings a day,” the source insisted, claiming it’s all a dramatic show.
Trump does have some acting bona fides. He was, of course, in his own show, “The Apprentice,” and had cameos in “Home Alone 2: Lost in New York” and the Sandra Bullock flick “Two Weeks Notice.”
He even won a Razzie — the award given to the best of the worst — for something called “Ghosts Can Do It,” starring Bo Derek in 1991.
On Tuesday, Law360 journalist Frank G. Runyeon posted a descriptive tweet of Trump nodding off, saying, “Trump’s head slowly dropped, his eyes closed. It jerked back upward. He adjusts himself. Then, his head droops again. He straightens up, leaning back. His head droops for a third time, he shakes his shoulders. Eyes closed still. His head drops. Finally, he pops his eyes open.”
On Monday, Maggie Haberman also wrote, “Even as a judge was hearing arguments on last-minute issues in a criminal case that centers on salacious allegations and threatens to upend his bid for the presidency, Mr. Trump appeared to nod off a few times, his mouth going slack and his head drooping onto his chest. The former president’s lead lawyer, Todd Blanche, passed him notes for several minutes before Mr. Trump appeared to jolt awake and notice them.”
The Trump campaign has responded: “This is 100% Fake News coming from ‘journalists’ who weren’t even in the court room.”
Trump has repeatedly referred to Joe Biden as Sleepy Joe, causing some to refer to him as Sleepy Don, and starting a raft of memes on social media.
Trump is charged with 34 counts of falsifying business records related to 2016 hush money payments to Daniels. Each count could bring up to four years in prison. Zzzzzz?
