The Marshall Project, the Pulitzer-winning nonprofit media organization covering criminal justice, has appointed Phil Trexler the new editor-in-chief for The Marshall Project – Cleveland.
In his new role with The Marshall Project – Cleveland, Trexler will oversee the Cleveland newsroom’s investigative reporting on Cuyahoga County’s criminal justice system and guide reporters in investigative, data and community engagement journalism that directly serves local audiences.
Trexler joins The Marshall Project – Cleveland from WKYC in Cleveland, where he spent nearly eight years as an executive producer of investigations and was responsible for researching and developing investigations into TV and web packages. He also spent more than two decades as a newspaper reporter, including 16 years covering crime and criminal justice at the Akron Beacon Journal. Trexler’s three decades in journalism focused heavily on criminal justice issues, including police misconduct and individuals who were wrongfully convicted.
Trexler has won several awards for his work in broadcast, digital, and print media, including a regional Edward R. Murrow and four regional Emmys. He was also recognized several times as the best news writer by the Ohio Associated Press Media Editors.
Trexler has also written two books: “The Cleveland Indians Yesterday & Today” and “Ballparks.”
“Phil’s TV experience and investigative expertise will come in handy in our first local newsroom that’s already making waves with high impact journalism and an active and diverse list of partners that continues to grow,” said Marlon Walker, managing editor, local.
Trexler joins The Marshall Project – Cleveland’s newsroom of award-winning journalists with deep ties to the Cleveland area, including staff writers Stan Donaldson Jr., Cid Standifer, and Mark Puente, as well as contributing editor Rachel Dissell and outreach manager Louis Fields.
Trexler officially joins The Marshall Project – Cleveland on June 5.
