Criminal defense lawyer turned political activist (and Democrat turned Republican) Maud Maron is the first announced challenger to Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg — and so a ray of hope for unseating the radical soft-on-crime prosecutor.
Just a week ago, many in NYC political circles were despairing that Bragg would coast to re-election next year because no moderate Democrat had emerged as a challenger — and most likely won’t — in the June 25 Democratic primary.
Running as a Republican in Manhattan will be no cakewalk, but ex-Democrat Maron can build on the the 120,000 “disaffected voters” who stayed home on Election Day rather than vote for Vice President Harris.
Maron told The Post that she would work to restore public safety and justice, remove violent mentally ill people from city streets, prosecute criminals regardless of immigration status and repeal DA Bragg’s infamous “Day One memo.”
And she brings her experience and insight as a Legal Aid criminal defense attorney to the race.
As a member of Manhattan Community Education Council 2, Maron fights for students, parents and better schools — for education over ideology.
Bragg’s focus on woke ideology over a commonsense approach to criminal justice and just prosecutions has endangered Manhattan residents and businesses.
His decisions to prosecute Harlem bodega clerk Jose Alba, Daniel Penny, and Donald Trump were pure politics, while his refusal to go after repeat offenders and Tren de Aragua thugs is pure dereliction of duty.
