San Francisco cop-hater Darcie Bell got a glimpse of her much-desired world without law enforcement this week when a brazen thief made off with a U-Haul packed full of everything she owns.
Hmmmmm. Almost seems like, in a world that includes sociopaths willing to steal a full moving truck, having a regulated force of trained officers licensed by the state to project and serve the law-abiding is a . . . good idea?
Who’d a thunk!
U-Haul theft is not a crime of poverty; Jean Valjean swiped a loaf of bread to keep his sister’s children from starving, not a box truck full of goodies three weeks ahead of Christmas.
The world is full of evil people. They kill, steal, and rape because they lack any real control over their uglier impulses.
Not because of poverty or racism or sexism.
That’s why we need police. Full stop.
It’s as true in San Francisco as it is in New York, Nairobi, Nanjing, and Narvik.
Bell gets this, by the way: She not only filed a police report (guess the boys in blue aren’t fascist jackbooters when it’s your stuff gone missing), she threw a public temper tantrum when the cops failed to find her stuff right away.
She also jabbed U-Haul for not putting GPS in its trucks.
But perhaps realizing her ACAB cred was in danger, Bell reverted to form and demanded more police defunding.
Yet she plainly understands it’s better to live in a city where crooks are too scared to steal whole U-Haul trucks.
Which means she gets the connection between the pro-crime policies that San Francisco’s embraced for years and crime rates rising and staying high.
Incoming is Daniel Lurie, a new, safety-focused mayor, so that may start to shift.
But don’t hold your breath for Bell to actually admit this is necessary.
No matter how deeply she and all her cop-hating comrades everywhere know it to be true.
