A 15-year-old boy suffered head injuries when he fell while subway surfing in the Bronx, according to police sources.
The unidentified teen fell just before 6 p.m. Tuesday from the top of a 5 train at the East Gun Hill Road station between Gun Hill Road and Pelham Parkway, the sources said.
Some of his friends were at the station, although the injured boy is thought to have been the only one risking his life by surfing the train, the sources said.
He was found with head injuries and taken to NYC Health + Hospitals Jacobi, where he is listed in stable condition, police said.
Subway surfing deaths dramatically increased last year, according to NYPD data.
Six people died trying to perform the dangerous stunt, with half of the deaths taking place between September and October.
There were also at least 181 others arrested by November 2024 for subway surfing-related incidents, according to NYPD data.
The MTA has made some efforts to combat the reckless stunt, including initiatives like subway announcements voiced by New York City students urging passengers to “ride inside” and “stay alive.”
