A Seattle mother is accused of beating her teenage son to death with an extension cord because he didn’t finish his chores — allegedly telling cops she “went too far” while spanking him.
The 29-year-old mother called 911 Thursday afternoon to report her 14-year-old son became unresponsive while she was spanking him with an extension cord, KOMO News reported.
“[Mother] stated she was spanking him with an extension cord, and it went too far,” according to a police report.
“[Mother] stated that [son] did not complete his chores, and she was angry. [Mother] told him it was ‘butt cutting time.’ [Mother] ordered [son] to remove his clothing and used an extension cord to strike him.”
The police report alleges the mother told investigators she shoved her son against a wall and he hit his head, causing him to become unconscious and fall to the floor.
“[Mother] continued to beat [son] while he was on the floor,” the report states. “[Mother] ordered [son] to stand, which he complied. [Mother] continued to beat [son] for approximately an hour.”
The mother told cops she stopped the beating when her son became unresponsive, according to the police report.
She failed to appear in court Friday during a bail hearing, however, her public defender argued for her release from jail arguing she was experiencing “trauma” over the loss of her son.
“I know of the seriousness of these facts, but this also involves a mother losing her son and significant trauma she is experiencing from that,” attorney Zelena Jones told Judge Jill Klinge.
Jones added: “I’d also argue there would be additional trauma on top of that if she is incarcerated. Given her limited history, the fact it appears she cooperated with law enforcement, and the fact that she has very limited resources, she should be released.”
The judge, however, sided with prosecutors who asked that the mother’s bail be set at $3 million.
The woman was not publicly named as of Monday because she had not yet been formally charged. Her son is only referred to as “J.R.” in the police report.
Prosecutors expect the woman will be charged on Tuesday.
