An Arizona grandma kept her mentally impaired granddaughter locked in a poop-filled cage until the girl, covered in wounds, died — and now officials have ruled the death a homicide, cops said.

The 13-year-old’s grandmother, Virginia Lujan, was indicted for child abuse in January for allegedly locking the girl in a “makeshift cage” and savagely beating her to keep her in line, leaving her with sores and bruises across her body, according to officials in Tempe.

The girl, Melony Granados, had the mental capacity of a 3-year-old, and investigators ruled her death a homicide last month after examining her body and horrifying living conditions, ABC 15 reported.

The grandmother — who died in jail last month — had locked the girl in a “makeshift cage … which was full of feces and had a foul odor,” cops said.

“The best way to describe it, it was a bunk bed, but the lower bed of that bunk was not there. And the bunk bed around the bottom was surrounded by baby cages and makeshift bars,” a police spokesperson told CBS 5.

Cops said the rest of Lujan’s house was filthy with “deplorable” living conditions.

Police found Melony unresponsive on the night of January 22; she died in the hospital the next day.

Lujan, 55, told cops Melony had fallen down the stairs, according to CBS 5.

She claimed she didn’t call for help at first because she thought the injuries were no big deal and only alerted authorities after the girl fell unconscious.

But her multiple wounds were in various stages of healing, officials said, suggesting they had been inflicted over a long period of time.

The girl’s mother, Jami Hodges, 33, didn’t live with her daughter but allegedly knew about the horrifying abuse.

“Both Lujan and Hodges admitted that the girl was kept in this ‘cage’ to keep control of her,” officials said in a statement.

The mom, who also faces child abuse charges, allegedly told cops she hadn’t heard anything about a fall down the stairs.

Lujan and Hodges had been indicted for two counts of child abuse, plus counts of tampering with physical evidence and tampering with a witness.

But Lujan died in jail before she could be formally charged; authorities have not disclosed the details of her death but claim it was from natural causes, according to ABC 15.

Hodges has been released pending charges.

She has four other kids, all of whom are in the care of the Arizona Department of Child Safety, and Hodges has been released pending charges, the outlet added.
