A Florida couple was thrown behind bars after their four-year-old twins shot themselves with a loaded handgun they found stuffed under a couch cushion — a weapon their mom had allegedly forgotten to secure following a night of drinking.
Keishara Goodrum, 39, and Maurice Wayne Bright Jr., 40, were arrested Saturday after their young twins suffered critical gunshot wounds — including one to the arm — when the boys discovered the gun while playing in the living room of their Orlando home, according to the Orange County Sheriff’s Office.
The careless mom told police she had been drinking heavily the night before and stashed her gun under a couch cushion in the living room because she wasn’t wearing clothing with a waistband, an arrest affidavit obtained by The Post said.
The next morning, the parents were busy in the house when a loud “pop” rang out, the document said.
Goodrum, who was making breakfast for her five children, ran out of the kitchen and found one boy with a bullet wound near his arm. While rushing to a local hospital, the allegedly negligent couple realized the other boy had a “large amount of blood in his shirt,” and was also shot, police said.
Both children were later transported to Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children for treatment.
The twins remain hospitalized in critical but stable condition.
Police said three other firearms were also found inside the family home.
Goodrum was charged with two counts of child neglect with great bodily harm, and Bright was hit with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
The Department of Children and Families now has custody of their children, WFTV reported.
The parents are reportedly each being held on $10,000 bonds.
