The hit-run driver who plowed into seven pedestrians in a Midtown crosswalk late Sunday — then zoomed off and crashed into two cars in Queens — has been hospitalized for a psych eval, cops said Monday.
The 29-year-old Honda Accord driver, whose name has not been officially released, is believed to have been suffering a mental-health episode at the time, police sources said. She was taken to Long Island Jewish Medical Center after cops cuffed her, authorities said.
The driver, who tested negative for alcohol, was tearing through a red light when she struck the victims, police said. She is being evaluated because of complaints of pain and also undergoing a psychiatric evaluation, cops said.
The woman struck a group of people in a crosswalk at West 36th Street and Sixth Avenue in Manhattan just before midnight and then kept driving to the Queens-Midtown Tunnel, sources said.
Seven people were hurt in the Manhattan crash. Those who were hospitalized were in stable condition as of Monday morning, police said.
Five of them were taken to Bellevue Hospital: a 34-year-old woman who was initially listed in critical condition and four men ages 24, 27, 28 and 60, authorities said.
A 32-year-old man was taken to Weill Cornell Medical Center, and a 30-year-old man refused medical attention at the scene.
The fleeing motorist then went on to strike two cars on the Long Island Expressway near the 188th Street exit in Queens before her car became disabled, police said.
She was nabbed at the scene after cops matched her license plate to the Midtown crash, according to sources.
No one was hurt in the second crash, cops said. The other drivers were able to continue on their way after exchanging their information with police, authorities said.
Charges are pending against the Honda driver, police said.
