A 35-year-old man was stabbed to death in Washington Square Park Wednesday afternoon as oblivious New Yorkers lounged nearby, authorities said.
The victim was knifed in the chest at about 4:25 p.m. in the northwest corner of the park, according to police.
He was found slumped over by a garbage can in an area where homeless New Yorkers often congregate, according to police sources.
The man rushed to Lenox Hill Healthplex – Greenwich Village where he was pronounced dead.
He was breathing when emergency responders first arrived but could not be saved, cops said.
The victim was arguing with two other men when the dispute turned deadly.
One of the men plunged a sharp object into the 35-year-old’s chest and both suspects fled the park, heading west on Waverly Place, according to New York University Campus Security.
It’s unclear what prompted the dispute, but none of the parties are believed to be affiliated with the nearby university.
Parkgoers told The Post they had no idea the grisly crime had happened just feet away until ambulances and police cruisers flooded the area. Several helicopters also buzzed overhead.
The victim’s identity was not released as police work to notify family members.
There have been no arrests and the investigation is ongoing.
The stabbing comes just four days after a homeless man fatally stabbed a straphanger on a Manhattan subway train early Saturday morning allegedly over a botched drug deal.
A day later, a crazed man went on a slashing spree — seriously cutting three different women in unprovoked attacks throughout the city’s subway system.
