NYPD faces a violent onslaught of rising assaults: Letters

The Issue: A disturbing increase in the number of assaults on NYPD officers since 2020.

The report on the record number of NYPD officers who have been assaulted is absolutely appalling (“NYC’s finest under attack,” Feb. 11).

Five thousand of our dedicated men and women in blue were attacked and injured by crooks in 2023.

The NYPD can neither effectively do its job nor protect its members due to legal constraints imposed by both the feckless City Council and the criminal-justice system.

We have the finest police department in the entire country, and our officers are always putting their lives on the line for us — each and every day.

Felons are more protected than our police and this is simply unacceptable.

There will likely be even more officers putting in their retirement papers or simply resigning due to all of this craziness.

This will certainly make New York even more dangerous than it already is.

John Amato

Fresh Meadow

Gov. Hochul, Mayor Adams and Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg should be ashamed of what they’ve let New York City become since they have taken over.

New York is on the verge of becoming a crime and drug-infested city run by Democrats.

It’s only a matter of time before the public realizes that if police officers aren’t safe in the city, how could anyone else be safe?

Five thousand New York police officers were assaulted last year — this is disgraceful.

This is all caused by the Democrats and their liberal supporters.

Bill McCreary

Levittown

The number of police officers assaulted in New York is alarming.

Officers are obliged to discharge their duties with the fear that they may suffer legal and personal consequences.

The prohibitions that guide their everyday actions may result in personal liability.

They function in a system that does not respect their profession and continues to pass restrictive legislation that favors criminals and contributes to the increase in injuries to officers.

John Gargiulo

Whitestone

With the attacks on the city’s police officers on the rise and the situation completely out of hand, it is necessary to re-equip them with the nightsticks that were taken away from them.

Jim Miller

High-level politicians are in denial concerning migrant crime in New York (“Maduro’s moped marauders,” Feb. 12).

It is obvious from the media’s reports on the many crimes in the city: the Venezuelan migrants using motorbikes to rob people, the groups of migrant shoplifting throughout Manhattan and other boroughs, the assault on two police officers by several migrants and now the shooting in Times Square.

The people within the city are already concerned with crime as it stands.

Now adding to that concern is the problem of migrant crime.

Instead of saying it isn’t a problem, our politicians — who made our city a sanctuary city in the first place — should clean up their mess.

They need to stop spending billions on migrants and bring in ICE to deport migrant lawbreakers.

Joseph Comperchio

Brooklyn

Good people of New York, these illegal migrants have nothing to fear.

They believe nothing will ever happen to them thanks to New York’s failed criminal-justice system.

It’s time for each and every one of you to step up so that you all can rid your city of this illegal invasion.

We need to round up and deport these migrants.

Ron Heimer

Yuma, Ariz.
