A 3-year-old girl clinging to her life after a brutal hammer attack in Brooklyn is in a coma and fighting a lung infection, her aunt told The Post.
Sophia and her 5-year-old brother, David, were horrifically beaten by a hammer-wielding maniac inside their Sunset Park home this week.
“The boy is good now,” the children’s aunt, Jinchai Liu, said Saturday. “The girl is still sleeping.”
The children’s mother, Zhao Zhao, 43, was killed in the Wednesday attack allegedly carried out by roommate Liyong Ye, 47, who was arrested and charged with murder.
Heartbreaking images released by the family show the children lying in their hospital beds at NYU Langone Hospital Brooklyn. They were later moved to Bellevue Hospital.
In one of the images, the child appears to have a neck brace, and is surrounded by tubes as they lay with their swollen eyes shut.
The family started a Gofundme to help the children.
Jing Hong Liu, Zhao’s husband and the father of the two young victims, will be unable to work as he stays by his kids’ bedsides, according to the online fundraiser, which has brought in more than $33,000 so far.
“Five year old David and three year old Sophia were the couple’s pride and joy. They made all the sacrifices possible to ensure their children would have a better future,” organizer Nicole Huang wrote on the fundraiser website.
The father was escorted into Bellevue by police on Saturday around noon, and gave a statement via state Sen. Iwen Chu’s office.
“Whatever happens next, we will face it together and provide the best care I can offer to my children,” said Liu, according to a news release from Chu (D-Brooklyn), who announced that an attorney had agreed to work with the family to make sure the donations go toward their medical, housing and educational needs.
“I cannot begin to imagine what Mr. Liu is going through,” Chu said in the release.
