A Michigan grandma was reportedly gunned down by a friend at a baby shower and her son allegedly tracked down his mom’s killer and hit her with his car — in the parking lot of a Detroit police station.
The twisted tale began Sunday when the shooting victim — identified by her family as Phebe Williams, age 53 — went to a baby shower on Detroit’s east side.
Her 46-year-old friend showed up to the event and accused Williams’ son of a crime, according to WXYZ Detroit.
The friend — who has not been identified — had gone as far as reporting Williams’ son to the city police last week.
The two fought before Williams allegedly hit her, the station said. Another person allegedly spit on her.
That’s when the woman pulled a gun and opened fire, killing Williams.
The shooting stunned family members, who are struggling to comprehend why the woman would take such drastic action.
“She’s a friend of the family. They’d been friends since they was kids,” Shavonda Carter, Williams’ niece, told the station. “I don’t understand why would she even pull a gun out.”
“Y’all could have just fought. You didn’t have to pull a gun,” Carter continued. “There’s kids in the house. It’s a lot of people in the house, so why would you pull out a gun?”
After pulling the trigger, the woman got in her car and called the Detroit police to tell them what she’d done. She drove to the city’s 9th precinct a few miles away to turn herself in.
But it appears she didn’t realize that Williams’ son had followed her to the parking lot.
When she got out of her car, he sped up and ran her down, the station said.
Cops have arrested both Williams’ son and the shooter, who was hospitalized in serious condition. It’s not clear if the son who ran the shooter down was the same kid who the shooter reported to the police.
Detroit Police Captain Donna McCord said the shooting was another example of the city’s “senseless gun violence.”
“Even licensed gun [carriers], which our shooter was … have to be responsible with their weapons,” McCord said.
“If something happens, and you need police assistance, please call us,” she continued. “Let us deal with the situation. Don’t take the matter into your own hands. If you can get away, get away. Call 911. Let us come in and handle the situation.”
