Two people were shot in Denver after the Nuggets’ NBA championship parade on Thursday, according to police
The Denver Police Department confirmed around 1:15 p.m. local time that it was investigating a shooting near 17th Street and Curtis Street, which is right along the Nuggets’ parade route in the city’s Central Business District.
The shooting happened around the conclusion of the Denver Nuggets rally after the parade, according to KDVR.
The conditions of both victims were not known at this time, cops said. Additional details were not immediately available.
Separately, a Denver cop suffered serious injuries when he was struck by a firetruck near the end of the parade route at W. 13th Avenue and Cherokee Street, according to police.
The officer’s lower leg was injured and he was taken to an area hospital in serious but stable condition, cops said.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
The shooting near the parade route comes just three days after 10 people were wounded in a shooting while thousands were out celebrating the Nuggets’ championship victory over the Miami Heat.
Denver Police Department Chief Ron Thomas said multiple shots were fired into a small crowd. Police said the altercation possibly stemmed from a fentanyl drug deal after multiple bags of the deadly opioid were recovered at the scene.
Nine men and one woman suffered gunshot wounds, but none of the injuries were life-threatening, a Denver Health Medical Center official said.
Officers arrested two men at the scene — Ricardo Vasquez, 22, for possession of a controlled substance and weapons possession, and Raul Jones, 33, for possession of a weapon by a previous offender.
