As outreach manager for The Marshall Project – Cleveland, I am extremely excited about Issue 15 of News Inside. This is our first issue to include an insert we call “Cleveland Focus,” which deals with news specific to us.
News Inside is a free magazine created with The Marshall Project, a national nonprofit newsroom devoted to issues involving criminal justice and prisons. News Inside is produced by formerly incarcerated individuals like myself who share the goal of challenging the false narratives about people who’ve been entangled in the criminal justice system.
News Inside and The Marshall Project strive to provide award-winning investigative journalism backed by credible data, so that you can stay informed.
News Inside offers individuals who’ve been impacted by the criminal justice system the unique opportunity to be heard and understood. We believe ownership of your story is a human right that fuels the foundation that forms you as a person.
The Marshall Project understands the power and responsibilities of media and has now provided you a platform to participate in that power with news reporting that reflects your experiences and your story.
I personally know what it feels like to struggle to find information or determine the facts around misinformation that often begins with a rumor circulating the recreation yard. I served 23 years straight inside the Ohio prison system before earning my parole. When I was struggling to figure out how to gain my freedom, News Inside would have been a valuable resource.
News Inside journalists work to provide accurate information concerning new laws, while spotlighting formerly incarcerated individuals who are doing amazing work within the walls and among the community.
The Marshall Project – Cleveland aims to expose abuses in Cuyahoga County’s criminal justice system, through investigative, data and community engagement journalism. Those systemic issues usually have statewide impact. You can read about the newsroom and our work here.
News Inside should provoke a sense of pride and power as you flip through the pages and explore news reporting created to directly impact you and your situation.
Thank you for your support and we hope you enjoy the magazine. We want News Inside to serve as a two-way conversation and we invite you to contact us with ideas and suggestions to help us better serve you.
Please send feedback and tell us what you think, and offer ideas you feel will improve future issues. This is an opportunity to tell our story. You now have the power to make a difference.
